[ACE] Devil's duty

[derek chandler ralston]

Derek raised his head at that, glancing over at him. And suddenly every instinct in his body said he needed to protect this boy no matter what. "How did they treat you?" He half growled. Because if they were still there, he didn't need them finding out Ace was here.

Ace shrugged. "The parents were nice. I mean, nice for foster parents.. But they had a son a couple years older than me they made the mistake of putting me in the same room with.. He couldn't have been sane.." He ran a hand through his hair, a million things running through his mind again. "He'd always call me dumb fuck because I don't know my colors and I can't read and I'm not human. He tried shoving me into the fire place one night, asking me 'where's your daddy now? Bet water can't save you this time'." He didn't even want to go into what the boy did behind closed doors, ran his hands down his legs again.

Derek winced, shaking his head, eyes angry. But he decided they best not linger. "Colors, huh? As in, you never learned them or they all look the same?" Was Ace color blind and they hadn't been able to tell? He smiled faintly. "There's nothing wrong with that."

"My grandmother tried teaching me when we were in Greece. But everything's just.. black and white. I mean, I know the grass is green and the sky is blue and the sun is yellow but like.. I can't see it." He shrugged, reaching down to mess with a string on his jeans. He coughed into his arm, looking over as someone came walking up, knocking on the door. But then he was gone with Parish, and Ace looked down.

"I don't like him. He's like.. weird." Chantel said, but Ace wondered if it was just because he was another wolf.

"That's kinda cool, actually," Derek murmured with a smile. He glanced up, eyes flashing as he watched the werewolf quietly until they left. Then he chuckled, glancing at Chantel. "weird? How so?"

"He's so gay. He's a wolf. He's supposed to have puppies.." She muttered, obviously very animalistic.

"Why's that bother you? I'm gay.." Ace mumbled, looking over at her.

"You're different. You're a human. He's a dog."

"So? Most male bats are gay, and they're animals." Ace retorted and she sighed.

"That's not the point.."

Derek bit his lip, then chuckled softly. "Not all werewolves want puppies, Chantel. There's nothing wrong with it." He himself didn't know what he was anymore. He'd let women use him simply as a distraction from the voices. And it had made him nothing but indifferent about relationships. He patted Chantel's leg gently as she argued with Ace about it, shaking his head.

"Well, your 'point' isn't going to make him any less gay. Worrying about everyone else is just going to drive you crazy, and then he still won't be any less gay. Worry about you and you having puppies.. No one else really matters when you think about it because you're living your life." He mumbled, But she just wrinkled her nose.

"Derek, I'm ready for bed.." She whined, pulling on his shirt.

Derek's eyebrows furrowed. He got up slowly, ruffling Ace's hair as he passed and headed upstairs. He tucked Chantel in, kissing her forehead. "I'll be in in a little bit," He promised, and left the room, heading back out to the porch and sitting down next to Ace with a sigh, careful not to touch him.

Ace yawned, drawing his knees up so he could lay his head on them. He looked out at the street, his eyes wandering up and down the street. He looked up as Derek came back, but didn't feel threatened. "Hey.." He said quietly.

"Hey," Derek breathed, stretching his legs out and bracing his weight on the palms of his hands, looking up at the dark sky with a please smile. "Mm, the sky is my ceiling," He murmured softly.

"It's even nicer when the water's your home.." He said quietly, running his hands slowly up and down his legs. He looked down, his eyes wandering over the lines in his jeans. He chewed on his lip, taking in a slow breath. "You're better to me than my on kind is.." He said quietly.

Derek looked over at him. "I have no reason to treat you as any less a person than myself or Chantel," He murmured. "And you'll see eventually. I'm not going to hurt you." He hesitated, then chuckled faintly. "And for the record, you're more sure of your sexuality than I've ever been. I'm sorry for her antics. She doesn't mean anything by it."

Ace chewed on his lip. "It's not that I'm sure of my sexuality.. It's that I've found out I'm really really not attracted to women.." He muttered quietly, then shrugged his shoulders. "No, it's okay. She's just.. openminded, I guess.. She says what she's thinking.."

"Huh, guess we have something in common," He breathed softly, shifting his weight. "Yeah...she is. And she just...doesn't understand a whole lot still...I've tried my hardest...but there's only so much you can do to help a person..I guess.."
